Fort Montgomery
Revolutionary War Forts
Orange County has 4 historic forts that were strategically placed on the Hudson River to prevent the British from sailing north. Two at West Point, Forts Putnam and Constitution, gave the patriots a birds eye view of the river, the latter providing the eastern anchor for the Great Chain placed to stop British ships. Fort Clinton at Bear Mountain and its companion, nearby Fort Montgomery, lost the 1777 battle to the British 63rd Regiment, but provided the turning point in the Revolution by deterring the King’s troups from strengthening their upstate counterparts.
