First Meeting of 2008

President Kevin Storms and Secretary Priscilla Johnson conduct at the first meeting of 2008. IOCCNYSAA will host the NYSAA conference in 2010.

Program Chair, Fred Assmus, introduces David Johnson.

David gave a fastinating presentation on his study of Gatlang, a village in Nepal in the shadow of Langtang Lirung, which is the highest peak of the Langtang Himal.  The Mountain Institute sponsored David’s documentation of mostly traditional life in this village.

At an elevation about 9,000 feet above sea level, Dave was struck by the similarities with Andian cultures living at similar altitudes: methods of construction, domestic charactistics, agricultural practices, artistic expression, and more.

Just traveling to and from this remote village was a story unto itself! The topography is so steep that much of the journey, once the roadway ends, is by foot paths cut into the mountainsides. Along with the hazards of landslides, one must contend with voracous leaches in the rain forest sections at the lower elevations.
