Ray digs Florida

Hard at work at the Ancient Hills Site near Ocala Florida.  (Google Earth 60th  Ave. and 38th Street, look for a trail running west from a gate  on 60th across a large field leading into some trees.)   This is a historic site, the archaeologist, Willet Boyer (in dark top and blue pants standing in the pit)  is teaching a class for credit.  The  feature is looking to be a privy pit with some 18th century component in the way of ceramics.  I am seated toward the rear of the photo (arrow).    Ray

David Johnson to present "The Sacred Paramo" at February 18th meeting.

The Sacred Paramo – Sacred High Andes Wetlands
Chapter President, David Johnson, educator, photographer, researcher, water consultant, author, recently returned from Peru, will present a program about the Sacred Paramo.
To ancient civilizations sacred sites often related to unique places such as landscapes, geological formations or environments. The Paramo, located in northern Peru in the high desolate elevations, between the upper forest line and the permanent snow line, has all of these. Ancient cultures revered the Paramo as one of the most sacred places along South America’s west coast. Last summer I had the privilege of photographing and documenting the most sacred region of the Paramo for organizations trying to preserve it as a world heritage site. This program will describe its uniqueness and spiritual significance, and how we can use this information to better understand ancient traditions and customs.

This Program is free and open to the public.

IOCCNYSAA Meeting Minutes – December 17, 2010

The December meeting of the IOOCNYSAA was called to order at 7:35 on Dec.17th by David Johnson, president.  Dave welcomed everyone and thanked them for bringing items to add to the holiday festivities.
Ray Decker gave the treasurer's report.
There was no secretary’s report for November since the annual dinner replaced the regular meeting.
Chuck Tudor was thanked for doing an excellent job of organizing the annual dinner held at the Fountains at the Wallkill Country Club.  John Hart from the state museum spoke about the agricultural development over the years.  This new information contradicts previous data regarding Native American agriculture.
It was noted that our member Roy Gustafson passed away in August.
There was no old business.  New business:  We will be hosting the 2012 state meeting and are looking for a new venue.  If you have any suggestions about a good site please let the executive committee know.  The 2011 state meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn in Johnstown, sponsored by the Van Epps-Hartley Chapter, on April 15-17. It is about a 2 ½ hour drive from here.
The program for January will be Doc Baynes on Iona Island, February-Dave Johnson on the high Andes Paramo and March-Barry Kass on Greek archaeology.
Stephanie Tice reported that the Florist site is closed until spring.
The Foxwoods Trip will be April 30th.  We will be carpooling.  Anyone interested in going with us or willing to drive please let Dave know.
We are investigating a new meeting place that will be handicapped accessible.  More information will be forthcoming.
Gary Keeton and Stephanie have put together a site policy.  The executive committee is working to refine it.
A poll was taken about having another flint knapping session.  A majority indicated that they would like one, with a refresher course. This will be our April program.
The meeting was unanimously adjourned at 8 PM.  Walter McGrath was the 50/50 winner.
The program was our Christmas party and Chinese auction, which was enjoyed by all. The assorted goodies on the enlarged refreshment table were enjoyed by all.

Respectfully submitted,

Priscilla Johnson, Secretary

Doc Bayne to present "Iona Island" program at January meeting!

Public program following the 7:30 pm January 21, 2011 meeting:
Iona Island
Doc Bayne, renowned local historian, photographer and educator, will present a program about Iona Island in the Hudson River below Bear Mountain.
From evidence of native Americans on the island through the colonial farms and settlements, when it was known as Salisbury Island, and later as Weygant's Island. In the late 1800s it attracted tourists with an amusement park, hotel, and picnic grounds. Iona Island served as a major Northeast United States Naval arsenal from 1900 to 1965, complete with explosions, saboteurs and of course, the famous mothball fleet following WWII. Since 1965, when the Palisades Interstate Park Commission took possession, much of the island and surrounding marshes have become a wildlife preserve, providing valuable habitat for many species, including winter nesting for Bald Eagles, during which the Island is off limits to human visitors.
This Program is free and open to the public.
