Dear IOCCNYSAA Members,

The Holiday season is upon us. We hope you have wonderful times with family, friends, and all as this season gets underway.

In fact, if you want to celebrate with us, we will hold our annual “Holiday Grab Bag” on Friday December 16 at 7:30 pm at the Mulberry House Senior Center. Please see the general rules below.

If you would like to bring a dessert too, please let us know in advance by emailing Stephanie at stephanie.tice@yahoo.com.

Let’s not let old acquaintance be forgot! (By the way, did you Robert Burns didn’t write Auld Lang Syne – it was an old Scottish folk song that he happened to be the first to write down and publish?)

December Special HOLIDAY GRAB BAG GENERAL RULES

1. You can attend the meeting and not participate in the grab-bag and everyone, member or not, are all welcome to take part in the grab-bag!
2. Anyone who wishes to participate in the grab-bag needs to contribute a gift.
3. Although archaeological themes are welcome, other gift ideas are also acceptable such as baked items. In other words, simply use your imagination.
4. We are suggesting the value of the gift be up to $15. 
5. All gifts need to be wrapped and identified as to gender-specific, if needed.
6. All participants draw a number.
7. Number 1 goes first followed by consecutive numbers.
8. Upon taking a gift it needs to be opened and shown to the group.
9. Following number 1 each of the other participants can either take a gift from the table or from one of the other participants with a lower number, however you cannot take the same gift back twice in the same turn.
10. If your gift is taken you can go back to the table and take another gift, or take a gift from another person.
11. After all the numbers are completed and gifts opened, the person with number one can exchange their gift with anyone they choose.
12. All participants are encouraged to take a gift from another person 
13. If they like that gift. This is what makes it more interesting. So don’t be bashful.

104^th Annual Meeting

April 21-23, 2023

New York State Archeological Association

Hosted by the Incorporated Orange County Chapter

at the Crowne Plaza Suffern-Mahwah in the scenic lower Hudson Valley

This is an open call for papers from any NYSAA member interested in submitting an abstract on any archaeological topic related to the prehistory or history of New York State or surrounding region. Students especially are encouraged to submit proposals for posters to be displayed at the meeting. 

• Papers, as presented, are limited 20 minutes in length.
• One paper or poster per presenter, although individuals may coauthor multiple papers.
• Presenters must be a member of NYSAA (coauthored papers must include at least one NYSAA member).
• Paper or poster abstracts, author’s name(s), affiliation, and AV requirements must be submitted by March 1, 2023 for consideration.
• Conference registration fees, $45.00 ($20.00 for students), must be received by April 1, 2023 for your proposal to be accepted.

The New York Archaeological Council will hold its annual meeting conference on Friday, April 21. The NYSAA business meeting will take place Friday evening, April 21. Paper and poster sessions will be held Saturday, April 22nd and Sunday morning, April 23. The annual banquet and awards ceremony will take place Saturday evening, April 22. A book sale room will also be available on Saturday and Sunday.

Richard Veit, Ph.D, Monmouth University Department of History and Anthropology, presenting:

“A Monument to Fallen Royalty”: Rediscovering Joseph Bonaparte’s Point Breeze Estate in Bordentown, NJ.

Tours of the Iron Industry, Sterling Forge and Iona Island will take place on Friday and Sunday (weather permitting), and will be led by local environmental educator and naturalist Doc Bayne. Sign up on the Registration form for the conference.

Chapter meeting: Special Speaker for November - online only!

 SPECIAL SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT

The Incorporated Orange County Chapter of the New York Archaeological Association (IOCCNYSAA) is proud to present a Special Speaker for November.

November is typically IOCCNYSAA’s annual banquet. Due to difficulties with reservations and COVID-19 concerns, IOCCNYSAA has opted to hold a virtual program instead on Friday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m. We hope you can join us. 

The speaker was part of NYSAA’s Dutch Symposium last April and blew us away with her fascinating talk, research, and boundless knowledge.

Meta Janowitz is a Historical Archaeologist specializing in the study of ceramics. She has worked as a Material Specialist for several cultural resource management firms and teaches at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. She has worked on numerous projects in New York City, including the African Burial Ground and the Stadt Huys (the first City Hall), and other sites in the Northeast, the Middle Atlantic, and the Caribbean. 

Meta’s special talk for the IOCCNYSAA will be about Dutch-American food during the 17th century based on both archaeology and paintings.

David Johnson

who will be presenting:

Researching Three Early Paleo Sites 

President-elect David Johnson will be the presenter at our October meeting. During August David worked on three early paleo sites located in Kentucky, Wyoming and Nevada. His presentation will discuss the research being conducted at these sites. Two of the sites are paleo quarries, and the other is associated with hunting Pleistocene animals including mastodon. The points found at the Wyoming site are being classified as a new type of paleo point. David will be presenting in person at our October meeting, and it will also be televised. For those who attend the meeting in person, there will be a display of artifacts from some of these sites.

The featured speaker is Chapter Vice President

 Veronica Ditko

who will be presenting:

“Recent Archaeological Research About the Pfahlbauer”

at 7:30pm (both in-person and on Zoom). Also known as the Pile Dwellers / Lake Dwellers of Europe,
these people lived from Neolithic to Bronze Age *mes. What is curious about them is that they decided to live on s*lted houses in lakes (and currently represent more than 100 UNESCO World Heritage sites!), yet they also farmed the land. Veronica will explore the possible reasons why and how they lived, based on archaeological findings, as well as what ended their way of living.
