Florist Site Field Season Opens for 2013!

Hi everyone! It's finally that time again and we will be returning to the Florist site starting this Sunday May 19th at 9am! We will be out at the site on Sundays unless I cancel or it is raining. Feel free to bring your shovel, trowel, hedge trimmers, sifter, etc but it isn't necessary if you don't have. Please be advised that ticks are very active already so bring along some bug spray if you are able. If you plan to come dig or even stop by and say hello, please let me know that you will be coming out. Thanks and I look forward to seeing everyone out at the site!

Occasional Papers Series

I am pleased to hear that the Occasional Papers Series will be continued.  If we are to be serious contributors to New York State Archaeology we must publish our findings.  This series was founded with the idea that everyone could contribute.  You need not be a skilled writer, you only need to be factual and The Chapter Editor will help you prepare your paper.   The reporting of a single artifact is perfectly acceptable.   The papers should be about Orange County sites and artifacts or about closely related areas such as, for example,  the Upper Delaware River Valley or the entire Wallkill River drainage area.
I strongly encourage every member to try his hand and be rewarded by seeing his paper published.

Sincerely,
Harold R. Decker, Member, IOCCNYSAA

President’s Message:
Dave Johnson photo
During the field trip to Flint Mine Hill last month several people were interested in the different types of flint found at the site. Even though the site is covered with flint most of it is weathered and consists of lesser quality material which was left behind. Therefore this month’s program will be on flint types from Flint Mine Hill. Gary Sipila and Joe Mlcoch will discuss the various types, and members are encouraged to bring in projectile points and other artifacts which they think are made from Flint Mine Hill flint.
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting,
Dave
