Happy Fall everyone! I hope the newsletter finds you all well this month and that you will be able to join us for our meeting next week and events we have coming up. If you are able to come out to the Highlands Conference, it is always a wonderful day of great talks, tour and
this year Gary's flintnapping! Lucy Johnson, PhD, from Vassar College will be our speaker this month, speaking about the "Archaeological Investigations at the New Hampton Site" This talk will shed further light on this past project done by our chapter.

Explore the archaeological treasures of Iona Island with Doc Bayne on Sunday, October 18th!

Doc, who also volunteers to keep the archives (interior treasures) in good order, will lead a walk to a number of pre-contact, Dutch, historic and modern sites on Iona Island, by privilege of a special permit, since the Island is closed to the public.

Doc needs to tell the Park how many people will be on this tour, so let him know if you are planning to be there: docforest@opton-

Directions from Bear Mountain Bridge Circle (PIP, Rts. 6, 202 &9W)
Head south on US-202 W/US-9W South - 1.5 miles; Turn left to Iona Island - Go to parking lot at railroad track.

Come to the F.S.F. monthly meeting at Sterling Forest State Park Visitor Center and make some new friends. Find out what you can do to help protect and preserve your Park. Bring your lunch! We’ll pro- vide coffee/tea and cookies.
Lecture: Basic Photography & Digital Editing
When Sun, October 4, 1pm – 3pm
Knowing how a camera works can make the difference between getting a “good shot” and getting a “great shot.” Doc Bayne, President of Friends and photographer extraordinaire, will show you how easy it is to get that great shot by combining the art and science of photography. Doc will also teach you how to make that great shot even better through the use of photo editing programs.
Hike: Bare Rock
When Sun, October 11, 12pm – 3pm
Hike to the spectacular Bare Rock Overlook featuring views of Greenwood Lake and Bellvale Mountain! F.S.F. members Mario Medici and Susan Serico will lead this moderately paced out-and-back hike of approximately 6 miles. Be sure to bring a snack and plenty of water.
Hike: Candlelight Night Hike
When Fri, October 16, 7pm – 10pm
Join Doc Bayne and members of the F.S.F. for a leisurely-paced approximately 2 hour night hike along the Lakeville Ironworks Trail. Doc assures us we will be amazed by our ability to see in the darkness once we get our “night vision.” Please, NO FLASHLIGHTS; candle lanterns only!

Understanding the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Division for Historic Preservation

  This session will cover an overview of the Division for Historic Preservation and its many programs; the National Register and a brief summary of its criteria and process; and, in the afternoon, a demonstration of the new CRIS database. Whether you are completely new to the Division for Historic Preservation or have specific questions about the National Register program, tax credits for owners of historic properties, certified local government, researching properties using the CRIS database, or other areas, come ready to learn and ask questions.
  Lunch and networking. Lunch will be on your own. Menus from local eateries within walking distance of the library will be available, or bring a bag lunch.
  Continuation of Understanding the NYSOPRHP – Division for Historic Preservation
  Village of Walden Historian Mary Ellen Matise will lead a brief walking tour of monuments in the Village of Walden after the meeting.
