AN AMERICAN INDIAN STONE TOOL QUARRY

CANAL ROAD, VERNON TOWNSHIP, NJ

Highlights include:

• A walking tour led by archaeologist Rick Patterson to view the Ring Quarry, a major American Indian chert (stone tool) quarry.
• Cultural Chronology: The site was mined by various Indian groups for thousands of years.
• See where Indian people extracted chert from veins in the rock.
• See mine tailings and processing areas.
• An Indian rockshelter/grave site excavated in 1970.
• The Wawayanda Canal, line kiln ruins, and an historic campsite.
• Pochuck Creek suspension bridge.
• Farmer's Bridge Prehistoric site.

DATE: SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2009 AT 10:00 AM

Directions: Take State Route 23 north past Oak Ridge Reservoir to Sussex County Route 515 (second traffic light past reservoir). Turn right onto 515 and drive north for 9.8 miles until you reach Maple Grange Road. Turn left on Maple Grange Road and proceed 0.95 miles to Canal Road. Turn right and proceed to parking area at end of Canal Road. Parking is limited! Please car pool. Hike will begin at 10:00 AM, rain or shine. Wear appropriate footwear and bring a light lunch and water. This is a medium level hike.
